Getting “Mortified” in Chicago

Whether we like to admit it or notwe have all had embarrassing moments throughout our lives, from the awkwardprom experiences to that time we made a fool of ourselves in front of our gradeschool crush (these things may or may not have happened to me). Moments likethese, although at the time seemed unbearable or strange, have helped definewho we are today. Not only was our adolescence characterized by someembarrassing moments, but it was also filled with both intellectual andpersonal growth as well as creativity and experimentation, some good and some bad. Most of us had different ways of exploring our creative sideor venting the frustration that comes with growing up. Some people played sports or gottogether with friends, while others wrote down their stories in a diary.

Mortified brings the stories ofshameless souls who recorded their adolescent creativity or most embarrassingmoments down on paper and had the courage to share these “awkward adolescentartifacts”—whether it be a diary entry, home video, or painting—in front of alive audience. The criticallyacclaimed story telling troupe, hailed by publications like Newsweek and ThisAmerican Life, is coming to Chicago this month to perform a live show to celebrate10 years of hilarious childhood moments that we can all relate to.

Along with celebrating it’s tenyear anniversary, Mortified will also be producing a documentary capturing liveperformances by storytellers and reactions/interviews from members of theaudience. The March 20^thperformance at Lincoln Hall in Chicago will be part of that documentary. This performance is highly recommendedfor fans of storytelling or those who just like to have a good laugh. Best of 2011

Finally, after much deliberation, hesitation, and procrastination, here are mine and Dan's lists for the best music of 2011. Dan's choices are all LP's, but I had two records in mind that weren't released in that format (one a compilation/boxed set, one a 45 rpm). That being said, I'll make it clear for any meddlers out there: I feel that the Beach Boys release below is a fair choice for one of the best releases of 2011 for the following reasons: (i) much of the material is absolutely new (to most), (ii) all of the material is new and unreleased before now in the sense that it has all been at least remastered and mixed differently, (iii) it was not released as an album reissue, but as a compilation proper (sadly, there will never be an album, strictly speaking, from this material), and (iv) it is too amazing to leave out of a list like this.

STS9 Brings “Spectacle” to Chicago

Five-piece instrumental jam band, STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9), will be performing a special two-night stand at the Congress Theater in Chicago, IL on January 21st and 22nd in honor of the “Great Cycle Spectacles.” As a band that has associated the Mayan calendar with their one-of-a-kind style of music, the “Great Cycle Spectacles” will honor the beginning and end of the Mayan calendar which ends this year. This very special experience is said to be “a spectacle of music, art, and imagination” and will only be coming to a limited number of cities. Join this beautiful celebration and go on a journey honoring all of existence at a show that is unlike any other you will witness in 2012.

Lollapalooza 2011

The 20th Anniversary of Lollapalooza, Chicago’s largest music festival, took place last week, and needless to say the muddied fields of Grant Park had more depth than the festival’s lineup. Nonetheless, nearly 90,000 people (myself included) flocked to downtown Chicago to see their favorite musicians perform. In all honesty, this year’s lineup was fairly weak compared to previous years. Many fans and critics complained that although the organizers of the festival did a nice job promoting its 20th Anniversary, they failed to attract any legacy artists who had performed over at Lollapalooza over the past two decades. The reasons why this was the case may be unknown, but would adding artists who played at the festival during it’s first few years (Red Hot Chili Peppers or Ice Cube) help celebrate Lollapalooza’s history and impact on Chicago? Of course it would have, but despite this, the festival sold a record amount of tickets. Maybe they will do more for the 25th Anniversary, but by that time Ice Cube may be booked and working on another children’s movie or quite possibly resurrecting his role as “Doughboy” in Old Men n the Hood, the sequel to Boyz n The Hood. Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the lineup.

I must say that I was fairly disappointed with the headliners this year compared to last year’s festival. 2010 saw bands like Arcade Fire and The Strokes take the prime slots of the festival, but this year’s headliners were Eminem, Coldplay, Muse, Deadmau5, and Foo Fighters among others. Were these headliners mainstream? Yes. Was the list diverse? Yes. Was this group of bands randomly put together? Probably. My main bone to pick with whoever books the lineup for Lollapalooza is that their lineups end up being less prestigious than the lineups of say Bonnaroo or Coachella. Even though the lineups may be similar because most festivals book acts who are already touring or are starting to tour, Bonnaroo’s lineup and Coachella’s lineup tend to feature better acts as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, I saw a lot of good bands at this year’s festival and I’ll get more into that later, but, I think the organizers tend to focus more on what is popular and less on what is good. This is probably me just being picky, but with tickets being around $200 I would like to see more for my money.

Don’t worry, I won’t be a total negative Nancy, there are a lot of great parts about Lollapalooza. Minus this year’s headliners, there were a lot of great, lesser known bands on the bill. One is Titus Andronicus, whom I had the great pleasure of meeting after their show. They are one of my favorite bands around right now, and I am glad that the Lollapalooza bookers recognized Titus Andronicus’ talent. Another great performance I saw this weekend was that of the Black Lips. The Black Lips are known for their theatrics on stage, and they did not disappoint. I won’t go into great detail about what happened, but it involved throwing a broken guitar into the audience and hitting a fan in the face. Luckily for him he was all right, and he got to keep the guitar.

My favorite performance of the weekend would have to go to Mayer Hawthorne, the soul singer on Stones Throw Records. Not only are his songs catchy, but he has an uncanny ability of getting his fans into the show, even the fans who were waiting for the band after him. Hawthorne taught the crowd a new dance called the “Earl Flynn,” a simple dance that made even the most suburban kids feel cool. If you have not heard anything from Mayer Hawthorne I recommend you check him out now. He will be back in Chicago in September. A close second for best performance goes to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The bands’ fuzz infused take on alternative pop-rock was fun to listen to. They are also a group worth checking out if you haven’t done so already. Some other bands from the festival that had great performances were Wye Oak, Mountain Goats, Bright Eyes, and Smith Westerns.

Say what you will about Lollapalooza, that it’s too commercial, “lamestream,” or overcrowded with people that know nothing about music, but the festival does attract a lot of people to the city of Chicago. Both tourists and musicians from all over the world come to Chicago during the weekend, which does a great deal for industry in the city. Even though many voiced qualms about the lineup, listening to music and getting free things from all of the vendors is a great way to spend the weekend if you ask me. Lolla-goers can easily double their investment with all of the tickets, t-shirts, music memorabilia, and other products that companies give away at the festival. So if you didn’t like the lineup, at least you could get a free bottle of Kefir yogurt, which I might add is absolutely delicious. Feel free to send some bottles to the station, Kefir.

Bon Iver - 'S/T' (Jagjaguwar Records)

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past month, you have probably noticed that Justin Vernon, the dynamic front man of Bon Iver, has been living in the limelight. From performances on late night television to features in magazines and NPR, the thirty-year-old native of Wisconsin has been taking the publicity surrounding Bon Iver’s new self-titled album with a grain of salt. From interview to interview Vernon displays a very humble demeanor. One would believe that the support of hundreds of thousands of fans as well as being sought out for collaborations with the likes of Kanye West would keep someone from showing such humility. Nevertheless, Vernon and his band Bon Iver return to their Wisconsin roots with their self-titled sophomore follow-up to 2008’s For Emma, Forever Ago.

According to Vernon, Bon Iver is an album that is much “brighter and colorful” than the band’s debut. For Emma, Forever Ago is an album that captures the raw emotion of the human spirit that goes along with dealing with the hardships of life. For Emma is not a negative album by any means, but it is easy to see the difference between that type of album and the “colorful” aspects of Bon Iver. The band’s new album is filled with bright, vibrant and elaborate instrumentation of strings, horns, and drums that takes a backseat to Vernon’s falsetto. Ultimately, it is Vernon’s ability to write such abstract and experimental songs that stand out throughout this entire album.

One of the things that separates Vernon from other contemporary songwriters is his ability to mix his instrumentation and lyrics so seamlessly to convey his artistic desires, and Bon Iver provides no exception. It’s almost as if the lyrics and elaborate musical composition cannot be separated from one another. Songs like “Wash” and “Hinnom, TX” include lyrics that listeners may find hard to make out, but the mixture of Vernon’s voice and the musical composition create a deep aura of peace and borderline spirituality. Even the final track “Beth/Rest”, which sounds like a track off of a Phil Collins album, shows that Vernon can stray away from his comfort zone and compose a song that is very distinct from other Bon Iver songs but still delivers the same powerful effects. Bon Iver continues to display that Vernon knows how to evoke the emotions of the human psyche, and that his beautiful instrumentation and angelic lyricism are coupled in order to have a lasting effect on a listener.

For Emma, Forever Ago is an album that tells a somewhat straightforward story. It covers subjects such as isolation, loneliness, and loss of love. These are all things that most of us can understand and relate to our everyday lives. Bon Iver, however, is an album that is much more difficult to define. With such abstract, poetic lyrics it is hard to sit down, listen, and easily comprehend what one is hearing. Despite the fact that the album is by no means an easy listen, it is still very warm because it has the ability to evoke such powerful emotions that we feel and recognize constantly, even though we may not understand exactly what we are experiencing. The songs on this album do not induce the folky, up-north feelings of it’s predecessor, instead, it is a much deeper album that seeks to analyze our place in this world and the significance of our lives in relation to the bigger picture of things surrounding us. In a recent interview with NPR Vernon described the track “Holocene” and the emotions behind the song's creation by saying, “our lives feel like these epochs, but really we are dust in the wind. I think there's significance in that insignificance.” It seems as though this album comes at a time when Vernon should be trying to navigate through all of the popularity and the hoopla surrounding his newfound success, but instead he is trying to decipher the smaller things in life; where we are from, who we are now, and where we are going. That search translated into the creation of this album, which may go down as one of the most powerful and thought provoking albums in recent memory. In a world filled with pop songs written by 15 year olds, music from bands such as Bon Iver provide a breath of fresh air and assure us that all is not lost.

Bon Iver is a very strong album altogether; listeners will not find any “Skinny Loves” or other singles that will become hits. Instead the flow of this album, that is, the arrangement of every song is what makes this album stand out. All of the songs coincide perfectly with one another to paint the vivid picture that Vernon tried to convey when he set out to record this album. It’s almost too difficult to try to judge this album in terms of good songs and bad songs; rather, it needs to be listened to as a whole. On a more analytical note, Bon Iver is less about interpretation and logic and more about feeling; Vernon wants listeners to feel and experience his music first and comprehend and interpret later. Almost like a puzzling yet wonderful dream that we do not want to wake up from, Bon Iver is a work of art that bewilders us but exhibits so much beauty that we do not want to stop listening.

Thurston Moore at Pitchfork Music Festival 2011

Another of the monoliths of alternative/marginal rock, Thurston Moore, is scheduled for the 15 July date of Pitchfork's festival this year. Of course Moore will likely play tracks from his newest release, 'Demolished Thoughts,' but my hope is that there will also be some inclusions from his earlier catalog (i.e. 'Psychic Hearts'). The fact that Moore was included in the lineup for the festival could mean that Sonic Youth couldn't/didn't want to do it or weren't asked; or maybe the organizers were looking to boost the appeal of a man who has personally fueled the "scene" that the media company relies on? In the latter case I would suppose that Moore's noise outings and collaborations would be of use to distinguish himself from SY. (Included below are 'Hang Out' from the Psychic Hearts LP, 'Frozen Gtr' from the Trees Outside the Academy LP, and 'Circulation' from the recently released Demolished Thoughts LP; no noise work from Moore is available online unfortunately.) In any case, it will be an excellent show no doubt, but will we be chagrined or politely shuffled through the breeze during Moore's performance?

My FIRST POST ever! Bone Thugs-n-Harmony (Concert Review)

Hello everybody, I'd like to introduce myself. I am Prince Pai, the new Production Director here at UIC Radio. I'd like to make a shout out for Tony Landek for working with us for the past years.

The evening of the concert, my friend Rich calls me out of the blue and says, "Yo, do you want to hit up a Bone Thugs concert? I got three more tickets they're free let's go!" I had to choose between the NBA Finals and Bone Thugs. I chose Bone Thugs in a heart beat and I had 30 minutes to get ready. The concert was held at Congress Theater.

I did not know what to expect of this concert. Although I've been a fan since I was a "lil' thug" they would say, I was unsure if it would meet my expectations. Before going, I understood that the Bone Thugs have been separated due to band drama, so I knew Krayzie was not going to be there, my all time favorite.

The concert far exceeded my expectations. There were people of every age group in the crowd, surprisingly I saw children there. Every Bone Thug was on point, especially Bizzy. His vocals penetrated the air, and you could hear him putting his soul into the music. I figured they would promote their new stuff and play many songs off their new albums, but surprisingly they only played a few. I felt as if it was a greatest hits concert without Krayzie and Wish. They played hit after hit, including, "Notorious Thugs," "1st of the Month," "Thug Luv," and more. According to Bizzy, "We got 18 years in the biz and we got a lot of hits to choose from." They paid tribute to past legends the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, and Eazy-E.

In my opinion, as a follower thug, I really enjoyed this concert. They did exactly what I wanted them to and that was play the classics. They got me pumped and I was jamming in the crowd. The one thing I wish was to see all of the Bone Thugs, but I guess everything can't be perfect. Bizzy Bone really picked up the slack and rapped for most of Krayzie's verses and the verses for the other people not present. They finished with "Tha Crossroads," as the epic finale. At the end of their concert, they spotlighted all of their band. The two keyboardists, drummer, bass and guitar players. And a fellow Chicagoan trumpet player. I respect that because those people deserve a round of applause.

Stay in tune! I'll let you all know if I hit up another concert and tell you all about it!

Alvarius B - 'Baroque Primitiva'

Though not a review--maybe one will be up in time--this is meant to be a peak at the newest album by Alan Bishop, formerly of Sun City Girls, if you haven't noticed it yet. It's all very mild in comparison to other releases by Bishop and the Sun City Girls, but the stunning creativity and force is still there. Unfortunately my favorite song from the album at this point ('Humor Police') is not available online, so I've included one track written by Bishop--titled 'Well Known Stranger'--and one written by Brian Wilson (credited as Smiley Wilson in the album's liner notes!). Having a Beach Boys obsession myself, I think it says something that the cover of 'God Only Knows' that is included on this album is a welcomed mutation of the original track, as if the original were fed more blotter sheets and wandered into South Central L.A. It is a great take on a track that usually has little to no benefit from being covered.

The Return of Bon Iver

The past fewyears have been very good to Justin Vernon. From the heralding success of his debut album tocollaborating with the likes of Kanye West, the Wisconsin native has stumbledupon overwhelming popularity. Originally, Vernon had no intention of writing music after returning tohis hometown following the break up of his band DeYarmond Edison. While living in isolation innorthern Wisconsin, Vernon slowly began experimenting and composing songs, leadingto the creation of his debut solo For Emma, Forever Ago under the Bon Iver moniker. Bon Iver eventually became a full-fledgedband consisting of four members and three years and thousands of album saleslater, the band has released the debut single off of their highly anticipatedsophomore album. The single,“Calgary,” was released on the band’s website just a few days ago and is nowavailable for free download. BonIver’s new self titled album will be released June 21^st onJagjaguwar. Tim Hecker - 'Ravedeath, 1972' (Kranky)

Tim Hecker's most recent release follows 2009's 'An Imaginary Country' and 2006's beloved 'Harmony in Ultraviolet' in sound and overall expansion. It is closer to the latter in terms of its subtlety and austere nature, but touches upon some of the dissonance and breadth found in the former. This album functions as a sort of sonic middle ground between the two aforementioned albums. It has equal parts brooding darkness and melodic bliss. Structurally the compositions are very abstract and each feels distant from the next and even from itself at times. The album plays on the theme of 'the death of music', which can be seen in the opening track, and also in the pieces 'Hatred of Music' and 'Studio Suicide.'

To involve itself completely, the sound has to have a sense of its own limits. In other words, it has to somehow be self-referential in terms of aesthetic and this only in single tracks. If there were a melodic theme strung throughout the album, similar melodies spread out during the album's unfolding, it wouldn't have the same atomistic density. Yet, it is at once dense, and at another moment fleeting and wispy; it seems like it's at every moment going to collapse into itself. And this murky, anomalous character is expressed perfectly on 'In the Fog' parts I-III. The sound in the suite doesn't smoothly unfurl to reveal a blissful soundscape; instead it almost bounces along with spartan pulses, a dark undercurrent of static and space buzzing internally. Unrelated sounds clang and pop, and Hecker seems to arbitrarily revoke certain layers keeping the composition unknown yet still of a basic homogeneous sound. Each time a layer is added or subtracted it is especially piquing but not totally unfamiliar. The suite unfolds before us as a foreign countryside does, but the journey itself is scattered with markers and sounds that seem at least intelligible.

Much of the same can be said about the suite that closes the album, 'In the Air.' As it divides and sputters into an unsteady static, layers of (what appear to be) ethereal piano notes ring out and strike (visceral connotations intended) the rest of the sound at times. (It could be possible that what gives these 'piano notes' their overbearing sound is the fact that Hecker has used as his main sound source for the album an organ in an Icelandic church. This is interesting when compared with the total outcome of the work and with the main thematic element.) Once the third part of the suite begins a space opens up as the static upheaval drops out for the most part. From here on we are confronted with lilting piano notes that begin to dematerialize or become like particles evaporating, losing their dynamic role in the composition. This is imposed on a brittle pulse that changes prominence as it gradually recedes from the track. A great ending for the album, and very telling of Hecker's outlook on the world of musical production.

The album is also made up of especially alluring tracks like 'No Drums,' 'Analog Paralysis, 1978,' and 'Studio Suicide, 1980.' These are particularly attractive because it appears that something happens in them, maybe something gorgeous, maybe some je ne sais quoi, and yet one can't really tell; total head music, you might say. There is a certain breadth that admits only of a static quality, and so the drifting nature of the tracks are, similar to the suites, held within a kind of structure, albeit an indeterminate one. This actually makes each listen feel cramped which is, upon reflection, a strange effect. Hecker has effectively created spaces in which the sound is predisposed to act in a certain way; what feels organic is acutely determined beforehand and we feel that these might be like museum pieces of his catalog.

'Hatred of Music' parts I and II are together made up of gigantic swells, melodramatic in mood and, after rising to the peak of urgency, fall into quiet despair and an unsettled nature. Of all the tracks on the album, this pair display the most outward gesture of theme and feeling. The album tells the tale of a revelation, an insight if you will into the deterministic nature of structured sound and its eternal return to the altar of its demise which it has so flagrantly constructed. This is one of Hecker's best and leads to much open-ended discussion, similar to the foregoing.

Guided By Voices at Pitchfork Festival 2011

Probably the best news about the lineup for this summer's Pitchfork Festival was that Guided by Voices is going to make an appearance. Robert Pollard, singer and principal songwriter, has gotten one of the lineups back together (Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, and Kevin Fennell) from which some of GBV's best albums were created. Unfortunately, as they're apparently only doing material from 1992-96, the first song below (from 1990's 'Same Place the Fly Got Smashed') won't be played unless the crowd roars the title. Even so, there will surely be songs from 'Propeller', 'Vampire on Titus', 'Alien Lanes', and 'Under the Bushes Under the Stars' which is more than enough to make most happy. Songs from each album are listed below respectively. Guide by Voices will be playing on 15 July, Friday at Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park at Chicago. Get excited.

Fleet Foxes- 'Helplessness Blues' (Sub Pop)

Fleet Foxesreturn with their much anticipated sophomore album Helplessness Blues. The band has been riding a wave ofpopularity ever since the release of their self-titled debut back in 2008. Helplessness Blues, much like the band’s debut, is filledwith carefully picked acoustic guitar melodies and Beach Boys-esque vocalharmonies. There is by no means ashortage of acoustic rockers in today’s music industry, but Fleet Foxes isdifferent than, say, Iron and Wine or even Bon Iver. Fleet Foxes has a more complex sound, which is evident intheir newest release.

HelplessnessBlues picks up where theband’s debut left off, but it is not, however “more of the same.” This band ofbearded pseudo lumberjacks explore much deeper subject matter, which can beattributed to the band’s rise in hype and success surrounding them over thepast three years. The lead singerand main songwriter, Robin Pecknold, shows that most of the popularity isvalid. Songs like the first singleoff of the album “Helplessness Blues” demonstrate the passion that Pecknold hasfor music and his thoughts surrounding the popularity surrounding thegroup. Pecknold, who himself ismuch of a recluse, describes how he would rather just fit in to the music scenerather than stand out. However,his talent and songwriting ability make it difficult for him to stay out of themusic industry’s spotlight.

One of the othersongs on the album worth noting is the instrumental ballad “The Cascades.” Avery dark and melodic song, “The Cascades” proves that Fleet Foxes are not justa band that is trying to write catchy pop songs to sell to car companies forcommercials; they are trying to express their love for solid instrumentation.The band successfully mixes this same style of complex/experimentalinstrumentation with vocals for what may be the best song on the album, “TheShrine/An Argument.” Having said that, Fleet Foxes did not take an extremelyexperimental route to producing this album. Just like the band’s debut, Helplessness Blues does contain a few standard popsongs. “Lorelai” and “Montezuma”for example, have very catchy choruses and verses that will probably stick withlisteners after they hear them.

HelplessnessBlues is a very strongeffort from Fleet Foxes. Pecknoldshows that he is quite a talented musician by simultaneously creating catchysongs that include very haunting harmonies as well as strong instrumentation.Pecknold dives into some very personal and somewhat deep subject matter on thisalbum, but in no way is it overwhelming. He provides a good mixture of beautyand simplicity and shows how much effort the band put into itscomposition.

Shannon and the Clams - 'Sleep Talk' (1-2-3-4 Go! Records)

This is the second full-length release from Shannon and the Clams and thankfully returns to the sound produced on the 'Hunk Hunt' EP. This is, to my tastes, a good move because their last album--'I Wanna Go Home' from 2009--was clouded by lo-fi production which didn't add to a consciously constructed aesthetic. In short, it was just muddled. Where 'I Wanna Go Home' was a gutter rendition of The Ronettes, Phil Spector-esque sound, 'Sleep Talk' channels surf-rock a la The Chantays and Del Hammond to produce some terribly catchy, brooding beach-punk. The vocals are in the red, heavily reverberated and of course still have their connections with The Ronettes' styling. The instrumentation is sparse though not exactly in the way that Minutemen were sparse; drums, guitars and bass ring in their own part of the spectrum on this record, which again is reminiscent of the 'Hunk Hunt' EP. There is no overlap in the instruments, the drums plodding along and the guitars basking in tinny tremolo and reverb.

The one problem with an album like this is that the A-side overshadows the B-side. It seems to be that the amount of strong tracks on the A-side (practically all of them) compared with the change in force and speed on the whole of the B-side make the latter seem drawn out and exhaustive. Whereas the former is full of slow, charming downer-pop, the latter piles on ample amounts of straight-ahead, fuzzy punk. That isn't to say that the B-side is bad because it's faster, just that it doesn't hold its own like the A-side. The title track (the last on the album) is a colorful play--almost solely lyrically, and only incidentally with the music--on the famous Santo and Johnny surf-exotica ballad 'Sleepwalk,' manifesting as an oddly honest metaphor of the group's appropriation of early and late 60's surf/garage music. This will a be a good long-player for the coming summer months.

Arcade Fire at UIC

Will Butler of Arcade Fire, whose most recent album The Suburbs was voted “Album of The Year” at the 53rd Grammy Awards, recently made a visit to our studio for a candid interview with Dan Davis and Kevin Creed of Electric Relaxation (Tuesdays at 10 p.m.) as well as UIC Radio Music Director Jordan Seaver. Butler, who plays multiple instruments in the band, was in Chicago for the groups’ three-show performance at the UIC Pavilion. The shows were a homecoming for Butler, a Northwestern alum, who spent a lot of his time in Chicago during his college years. Butler himself is also familiar with college radio, having been a disc jockey at Northwestern’s WNUR radio station. Kurt Vile - 'Smoke Ring for My Halo' (Matador Records)

Kurt Vile is aman with something to say. He mayat times be soft-spoken, but he is by no means ever at a loss for words. His songs are packed with words and meaningfrom beginning to end. However, seeing him live at an intimate performance atReckless Records over the weekend put him in a different light for me. If one hears his music they most likelywould think, “damn, this guy is a rock star.” Vile is definitely in a class ofhis own when it comes to guitar playing, songwriting, and especially performinglive. He looked as comfortable asanyone I had ever seen before, playing in front of a completely packed recordstore, and a large one at that. Despite his appearance and talent, he is a very well-spoken and humbleindividual who says a million thank yous after each song. Seeing how his latest album SmokeRing for My Halo hascatapulted him into a category of must see artists, it’s great to see aperformer who stays true to his passion. I would have to counter Chuck D and say, “believe the hype,” especially whenit comes to Kurt Vile.

Vile’s fourthalbum, and second full release on Matador, is impressive on many differentlevels. First, Vile continues toshow his prowess as a songwriter. With Dylan-esque lyricism, Vile touches on some very deep subjectmatter. “On Tour” tells about lifeon the road for Vile, who has been touring constantly for the last fewyears. He sings about not gettinglost in the corporate music industry that can relinquish creativity andindividuality when he sings, “I wanna sing at the top of my lungs, becausethat’s just me being me, being free.” Vile goes deeper in songs like “Baby’s Arms” and “Runner Up,” writingabout personal relationships in his past, both positive and negative.

Vile alsodisplays just how good of a guitarist he is on Smoke Ring for My Halo. Probably the song with the mostimpressive guitar composition, “Peeping Tomboy” displays his skill as well as impressive lyricism. On this song, and especially after seeing him live, you cantell just how easy it comes for Vile. He is a man with unfathomable musical talent, skills that do not bringfeelings of jealousy, but rather, gratefulness to whoever taught him how toplay the guitar and to the god given talents he bestows.

Another thingthat I noticed when I was listening to Smoke Ring is that it put me in a sort oftrance. It is an album that grabsyour attention with the first track, ties you down with the easy going “JesusFever, “ gives you everything you need with “In My Time,” and then doesn’t letgo until the very last song “(shell blues).” One of the things that has made Vileso popular is his ability to write such thoughtful songs. He pulls from experiences in his lifeand models his songs after those experiences. The album makes you feel like he is your friend, a friend who is taking you along with him on a journey, and a verypersonal journey at that.

The Strokes - 'Angles' (RCA)

Upon hearing the news that The Strokes would be releasing an album this year, I felt, well, let’s just say nostalgic. I had lived out my teenage years feeling a sense of superiority because I actually listened to a “cool” band in a world filled with 12 year olds that were listening to Avril Lavigne and Nickelback . Needless to say this sense of superiority ended when I was about sixteen, after The Strokes announced they would be taking an extended hiatus. Fans and critics began to wonder, what’s going to happen to this band that had such a profound impact on the independent music scene of the early 2000’s?

Well, four years later the band is back, experiencing the expectations of both fans and critics alike. Despite pressure to redevelop their old sound, the band still managed to do what they wanted (and act like they still don’t care) with Angles. During those four years on hiatus, each member of the band found their own sound, their own niche so to speak. Albert Hammond Jr. released two solo albums comparable in lyricism and guitar melody, however, the guitarist created a more refined sound, a less fuzzy and lo-fi indie sound than that of the band. Lead singer Julian Casablancas dabbled in synth pop on his solo album Phrazes for The Young while maintaining the same lyricism and vocal sound that made him so popular. The other members of the band also ventured into their own projects, each developing their own artistic style.

The four year hiatus seems to have prepared the band for their new release Angles. Although the first single “Undercover of Darkness” was met with critical acclaim and thoughts that the band was returning to the sound of their debut Is This It, critics soon found that the song is one of only a few on the new album that are comparable to the first album. The rest of the songs are quite different, each being influenced by the sounds and songwriting ability that the band developed after 2006’s release First Impressions of Earth.

Now on to the songs:

The first track “Machu Pichu” is influenced with reggae-like rhythm and is one of the band’s most experimental songs. The third track “Two Kinds of Happiness” sounds like a song from The Goonies soundtrack, showing how Casablancas has brought his own style and 80’s influences to this album. As a whole, Angles adds a more filtered and clean sound to the band’s repertoire. Songs like “Taken for a Fool” and ““Life is Simple in the Moonlight” include the lead and rhythm guitar of Nick Valensi and Hammond Jr. that made them so famous, but in a less garage/underground rock infused way. These two songs, as well as track four, “You’re So Right,” tie into the clean and crisp sound of Albert Hammond Jr.’s two solo works. As a whole, the lyricism and vocals of singer Julian Casablancas are on point. His voice sounds refreshed and more powerful than it did on the last album. However, It seems as though the band is relying less on Casablancas’s vocals and songwriting ability than ever before. Songs like “Taken for A Fool”(Valensi) and the last track “Gratisfaction”(Moretti) show how the other members of the band have improved their composition and writing capabilities, contributing heavily to the songwriting credit of this album. This is a contrast to the Casablancas dominated albums of the past.

This may not be a return to form for the band, but it is definitely an album filled with growth. With more members contributing to the actual composition and lyrics of the album, fans and listeners get a more collaborative effort from the band. Although fair-weather fans of The Strokes may be disappointed that the album is not like Is This It or Room on Fire, they can at least be happy with the fact that the band is together. It may take them an album to shake off the cobwebs of a four-year hiatus, but at least they are back. Another important aspect to look at is the fact that The Strokes are still relevant in today’s music industry. Angles is an album from a band that people still expect great music from. They aren’t a bunch of fifty year olds trying to go on tour (U2), they are a band that is still in their prime. Angles may not be what fans and critics expected, but like any other good band, The Strokes are trying something different. They are not catering to listeners and critics by trying to repeat the past. They are developing a new style, and they succeed in doing that. Angles may not be the band’s best effort, but it is definitely not their worst. It is still a fine album that many fans will enjoy. Take it or leave it, the main message presented is that The Strokes are back and, quite frankly, they probably do not care what you think.

Radiohead - 'The King of Limbs'

In the cult of Radiohead this album has been receiving mixed reviews, some claiming that it's heretical, others praising its consistency and elegance. On the surface it appears murky and shallow, but (as the initiated will tell you) this arcane piece of work does have depth that no one will truly understand until devoting their lives to humbling themselves in its sonic presence.

Regardless of what the authorities say, this album is at once the band's most cohesive and (thankfully) brief. Every song is aesthetically isomorphic and as a whole it is subtly experimental. This latter quality is to be praised most about the album, being something that was lacking from previous releases. There have been a fair amount of grey skies, sour guitar melodies, and lilting electronics on previous releases, but nothing so minimal and crisp as the sound explored here has yet been achieved by the band. Not only is the idiosyncrasy of the sound found in the keyboards, etc. making the melodies but also in the layered percussion and repetitive yet cascading rhythms it creates.

Whereas on previous releases the absence of a center of sound, so to speak, resulted in an open-ended atmospheric ambiance, on these tracks the listener is compelled to drift in a murky, thin stream of sound. It isn't so much space left after the absence of the normal presence of rock instruments, but a very compacted, thin sound that accentuates the absence and draws attention to its wholeness now.

Two criticisms of the album that do not detract from its appeal are its brevity and its seeming lack of input from guitarist Johnny Greenwood. I think the latter claim is completely unfounded. Simply because the guitar is not a prominent or primary instrument on the album does not mean that Greenwood had little to no input. The former criticism, about brevity, is strangely perverse. Assuming the impetus of the remarks are from a want of more material, it would seem that those proclaimers are missing the material that is given. That the album is excellent should be grounds enough for saying that it is complete, not that it's so good we need more of it.

A much more pressing issue is the artwork. It may just be an aesthetic qualm but it seems that there's nothing to it; the font is achingly stale and the haunting creatures appear more comical than unsettling. Setting this aside, 'The King of Limbs' is Radiohead's best album to date.

The year isn't quite done yet, but since I (Jordan Seaver, Music Director) won't be on campus much longer due to circumstances, I've decided to go ahead and finalize my top ten list of albums from 2010. I've also decided to include EP's in the list, mainly because EP's are still technically a legitimate source of a whole artistic work and also because a certain EP released earlier this year couldn't have been avoided when making my top ten list. Because this is finalized now, I realize that I'm leaving open about three weeks of possible releases, but I'm sure nothing will sway my considerations at this point, so I'll expect no qualms of any sort.

Brian Eno - 'Small Craft on a Milk Sea' (Warp Records)

Brian Eno has had a significant impact on contemporary music, pop and otherwise, and has been a source of consistently good (or at the worst of times, creative) music. I hasten to mention that this is not one of the worst, but certainly not the best. The concept for the album stems from Eno's work with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams (his collaborators on 'Small Craft...') on music for the film adaptation of 'The Lovely Bones'. Eno says that "Only five of the pieces" on the album were related to the film, and that the rest of the tracks are all imaginative pieces within the concept.

So what is this concept? It relates in some way to creating a widely-varying soundtrack that spans an era (which one, we don't exactly know). Each piece is "the mirror image of silent movies--sound-only movies." So we're presented with a collection of pieces that are meant to separately evoke distinct images within films, and each of these separate pieces is formed from its own structure. But there is still a dim line running through the collection, especially noticeable on tracks 'Complex Heaven' and 'Lesser Heaven' and 'Emerald and Lime' and 'Emerald and Stone'. Is this to reconcile the dream formed throughout the album, or does it betray the location of these five pieces drawn from the marrow of the aforementioned film?

There is method applied to each of the tracks; in his past work and again now he has used restrictions and rules for each performer so that, during improvisation, nothing escapes the 'necessary' structure. With these guidelines in place everything can evolve, but in a certain direction and with some sophistication. And method seems to ring out in the composition of the album (the song placement).

The tracks can be grouped into three blocks: the first is tracks 1-3, the second tracks 4-9, and the third tracks 10-15. The last of these I only distinguish from the first because of the temporal succession of the album and the fact that they come after the second block. The first three tracks are dense, looming, atmospheric contemplations including piano/keyboards, guitars, and heavy use of computers and electronics. One or two (especially track 3) of these compositions are quite morose and slightly spartan in melody. The problem with these is due to length and is in accordance with the next section: because they're much better than the block of tracks 4-9 one wishes they were longer than they are (the longest of the first block being track 2 which is only 3:05). The next section turns into an obstacle-ridden swamp, very trying at times and often hard to listen to without some sort of visual accompaniment. This middle section sounds reminiscent to the Crystal Method's output for films, with the exception of '2 Forms of Anger' which features taiko-like drumming and no-wave guitar (think 'Confusion is Sex'-era Sonic Youth) and 'Horse' which at times has very interesting guitar and computer work. But these two don't even come close to saving the middle section. The last section works out more spacey tones, is more brooding and ends with one of the best tracks on the album (and finally one that's over 5 minutes!).

The result is an album that feels loose, concentrated primarily in individual songs, but too defined conceptually and sonically. Each track fails to be a representation of compact film-worlds and visions and this is mainly due to that lackluster middle section. The track included (bottom) is the best of the album and best exemplifies the goal.

New Smith Westerns Track

Following the acclaim of their first S/T album released last summer (2009) and their subsequent move to the Fat Possum label, the Smith Westerns will soon debut their newest LP, 'Dye it Blonde'. To promote the album Forcefield PR agency posted a track from it on Soundcloud.

Similar to the objections and scoffing given in response to my criticism of a certain track from their last album, I'm sure I'd be derided for saying what I'm about to. I'll just lay it out then: I find in this song a huge reliance on post-Smiths pre-'Vauxhall and I' Morrissey. Obviously this doesn't mean Cullin's vocal style, but rather the various melodies and the lead guitar to be specific.

Deride, deride, but either they've undermined the Moz or he's overtaken them. However, the song is still pretty sick.

This has been an exciting semester at UIC Radio with lots of good stuff going on!

Let's give a quick fall recap to get every up to speed with everything that's going on at the station:

First, let me give a warm welcome to the two new members of our student run executive board, Program Director Tashay Dennie and Music Director Jodan Seever. Tashay is replacing Tony Landek who is moving back to his old position of Production Director. We look forward to having them continue the excellect tradition of UIC Radio!

Next, the 2nd week of school kicked off with one of the coolest student-only events in UIC's history. The 1st annual Spark in the Park was held on Harrison field and was a music festival featuring Footlight Frenzy, Barefoot Truth, Girl Talk and Kid Cudi. UIC Radio was on-site at the event to hand out promotional items and help DJ the event. Here's a quick pic I shot from my iPhone while Kid Cudi was performing "Pursuit of Happiness". Look at that view!

Finally, I'd also just like to give a shout out to all the DJ's we have on staff this year. In the ten year history of UIC Radio we have never had so many shows on air and so many DJs on staff! Watch, Now I'm Gonna Slide

With a string of recent decent releases, a history punctuated by certain bursts of excellent output, and overall consistency and critical appeal, Fat Possum Records is now making a truly golden and strategically precise move: reissuing and remastering a handful of T. Rex albums on LP. (Forcefield PR)

'The Slider'--which is the first album slated for reissue by the label--was released originally in the UK by EMI Records and in the US by Reprise in 1972, just one year after the much acclaimed 'Electric Warrior.' What makes this first reissue really exciting is the fact that it has not been released in the US since its original release in 1972. Subsequent reissues have been done in Spain, Italy and the UK in the late 70's and 80's but none that were remastered from the original tapes, and CD reissues have hit the US and Japan throughout the 90's. But now there is finally a release that will increase the availability of the album and present it in a way satisfying to audiophiles.

We'll have less gasping when it comes to Bolan's proto-glam opus, 'Electric Warrior' which has just recently seen reissue on 180-gram vinyl in the US by Rhino Records, and isn't without attention here due to the only T. Rex single to see the American Billboard Charts, 'Get It On (Bang a Gong).' However, the re-emergence of albums like 'Tanx', 'Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow', and 'Dandy in the Underworld', which never even saw original release in the US (and only on CD when they did), would be very appealing for those who know the band's material and enlightening to those who never thought it worthwhile to look into the rest of their catalogue.

Without the official list of which albums are to be reissued we'll just have to take some advice from Bolan himself: Rock On.

Summer time at UIC Radio

Hey all,

Since the Spring 2010 semester is over at UIC we are moving into the summer here at UIC Radio. Most of our student DJ's go home for the summer and pick their shows back up in the Fall. We have a handful of DJ's that will be working through the summer providing everyone with some talk, some music, and some good times.

Here are the shows that will be continuing through the summer:
Mondays: Hidden Treasures of Rock N Roll at 12pm, SN Radio at 8:30pm
Tuesdays: Heroes & Villains Radio at 6pm
Wednesdays: Get In Tune Radio at 6pm, Jackie B's show at 8pm
Thursdays: Sly Radio at 4pm, The Meatus Factory at 6pm
Fridays: Fire Radio at 3pm
Saturdays: Arroz con Pollo at 12pm, Julia's World at 4pm, Grainshifter Radio at 6pm
Sundays: Sundays Main Event at 6pm

These will be the only shows on air until 8.23.10 when the Fall 2010 semester starts here at UIC.

UIC Radio is launching our new website today. Although the site has a few kinks(well maybe quite a few) to work out, we think this website already serves our listeners better than our previous website. We will be getting all coding errors fixed, creating a new schedule/dj profile page, and soon integrating our new streaming software(hint...live365.com ).

Also look forward to hearing all your favorite UIC Radio shows re-broadcast at various times throughout the day in the future! Lots going on at the best college radio station in Chicago!

here first, the events going on for the week, and learn why UIC is the school to be at.

General Overview and Goal:

This show has the potential to open up blocked avenues when can serve as a feedback

line from student organizations, faculty, or even commuter students who sometimes

use UIC as a drive-through service for education. Each show would host/interview at
least one current UIC student. This will demonstrate how UIC can and is a school that is
interactive, multimedia and welcomes students input.

This will also give UIC the opportunity to provide students with information they are
requesting, thus, students would not just simply delete their UICMASSMAIL. The
segment would give students another avenue for obtaining information while checking
other media sources.
Using such interactive and innovative techniques will not only help the
radio station but also help build student and faculty retention at the
college. UIC radio has the opportunity to reach hundreds of students in a short period of
time.

UIC Radio is going to be slowly creating a new website for the station based solely through blogger. The "blog" will be a website that fulfills all the needs of our old website while giving us several advantages. The biggest advantage is how our new website will let us interact with our listeners in a much less complicated way. Our old website is strictly informational, we hope this new site will help us reach out to our listeners.

This site doesn't have a tentative completion date. When UIC Radio staff finds the website a suitable replacement for our current website which is located at www.uicradio.org, the blog will then be linked to www.uicradio.org and it will become the official website for UIC Radio.

Kid Cudi at UIC's first annual Spark in the Park

Next, the 2nd week of school kicked off with one of the coolest student-only events in UIC's history. The 1st annual Spark in the Park was held on Harrison field and was a music festival featuring Footlight Frenzy, Barefoot Truth, Girl Talk and Kid Cudi. UIC Radio was on-site at the event to hand out promotional items and help DJ the event. Here's a quick pic I shot from my iPhone while Kid Cudi was performing "Pursuit of Happiness". Look at that view!

Finally, I'd also just like to give a shout out to all the DJ's we have on staff this year. In the ten year history of UIC Radio we have never had so many shows on air and so many DJs on staff! We also always suggest people to apply to become a DJ at UIC Radio. Past DJs will all comment on how it was one of the most exciting things that got to experience at UIC Radio, plus we are the 'Chicago Music Awards Best College Station 2009' The new shows include:
